Onsen Lake House

A glass house on a northern lake, built around a Japanese bath garden — stone pool, bathhouse, sauna and cold plunge — with a studio and a guest cottage along the shore.

The idea

Bring the ritual of the Japanese onsen to the north woods: soak outdoors in a steaming stone pool while snow falls on the frozen lake.

The house is one long, gabled pavilion of black-stained wood and glass facing the water. A sunken conversation pit sits around the fire in a double-height great room; the lake wall slides open in summer. Behind it, a rock garden leads to the stone pool beneath the master deck, and a covered walk ends at the bathhouse's indigo noren. The studio and guest cottage sit further along the shore.

Everything here was imagined in a 3D concept model, then rendered across four seasons, by day and by night.
